Bamberg is a tourist magnet and a modern regional center with 77.000 inhabitants in the region of Upper Franconia in the state of Bavaria. The town was first mentioned in 902 A.D. and its historic center is listed as UNESCO World Heritage since 1993. Famous sights include the Bamberg Cathedral (with the tombs of Emperor Henry II and Pope Clement II), the New Residence and the Old Residence, the residence Altenburg, the old town hall, Michaelsberg Abbey, and “Little Venice” (a colony of fishermen’s houses from the 19th century along one bank of the river Regnitz). The University of Bamberg was founded in the 17th century and has currently about 13.000 students, adding to the city’s young and lively atmosphere. Bamberg is also famous for its smoked beer (‘Rauchbier’) and home to numerous distinguished breweries.
